My husband has POA and has gone through all the additional paperwork with my MIL's bank - BB&T and they approved the POA. However, they have told him can't be added as a co-signer to her account. How can he make any purchases for her? She is still in the hospital, but going home soon and we need to get medical equipment and all sorts of things ready for her. How do you all handle this?

Maybe they can not put you on as a cosigner without Mom being there. But I am sure as POA you can sign with the POA following your name. If that is questioned, then just send proof to the company questioning it.
I had my POA shrunk down to 8x11 paper so I could make copies on my printer. All that is needed for proof is the part that says you have been assigned POA and Moms signature.

The bank manager told me to sign my name followed by poa for .... on checks. I sent the poa to each utility company and set up auto pay from the checking account. If I pay out of pocket for anything, I can get reimbursed later.

mhwv05, guess each bank acts differently, and there could be different State laws. .

Surprisingly I had no problem being added to my Dad's checking account which was changed to read from John Smith over to read on the checks John Smith OR Freqflyer Smith. But then again, my Dad [94 at the time] was with me at the bank when we made these changes. The Bank did scan a copy of Dad's Power of Attorney. The bank Dad used was Sun Trust, which is now another name which I can't pronounce or even remember how to spell :P

Dad also gave me his credit card to hold for him, to use for any purchases. I also didn't have any problems using his card. It's not like a zillion years ago when clerks would look at the signature on the back of the card and ask for driver's license ID.

Hope you can get this straighten out.
