Find Care & Housing
I agree. My mom did not qualify for aides and could not afford to hire her own before she got on Medicaid. Now she qualifies for 63 hours a week of paid help! In my state (NY), long-term Medicaid for nursing homes and at-home-help Medicaid are two separate programs with separate applications; each state is very different. Also, my mom did not qualify for Medicaid until I found out about Group Trusts, which allow her to use her Medicaid spend down (excess income over Medicaid income limits) to pay her bills, rather than just for medical care. I would suggest you call your area agency on aging to find out more about Medicaid, and if you think your mom needs a trust and they don't know about it (that's what happened to me), call the Alzheimer's Association. They are EXTREMELY helpful, and will help families of people with dementia as well. Good luck on your journey!

The best thing for you to do is get Mom qualified for Medicaid. Medicaid may help with some limited home care, but will pay for all the care if Mom moved to a nursing home. Please note that every State has their own Medicaid programs.
