My father with dementia used to tell him self things over and over and over...(like Mr. X is coming to visit.) After awhile, what he kept telling himself became his reality. It is kind of like wishful thinking and then they totally believe it and defend it.

You just have to redirect the conversation or show them that it is not true if you can. This realm of the mind is very accusatory and makes its own reality at times.

Talking someone with dementia out of believing something is an exercise in futility. You can contradict them but you're just going to get pulled into a circular conversation that goes nowhere. You're dealing with someone who isn't rational anymore and doesn't think correctly or follow the laws of logic. The best thing to do is to redirect the conversation, get the person with dementia on another topic. Redirecting takes a lot of energy but it's less stressful than trying to convince someone with dementia that what they think isn't true.
