Mom moved into an ALF 5 weeks ago; was fairly amenable to attending things, music events, movie night, baking classes, informational seminars; now when staff go to escort her to such events she says ‘No’.

Help! She has to socialize! reverting back to living in her ‘cave’-closes blinds, pulls drapes, barricades her door. Any suggestions welcome.

Your profile says she has ALZ/Dementia and hearing loss. Both of these could be her problem. First thing that goes with Dementia is reasoning and comprehending what is being said. Then through in not being able to hear. Yes its depressing. How can you enjoy anything if you can't understand people. So, she rather be in her room where she doesn't have to socialize.

Try attending some activities with her. There's probably an activities calendar posted somewhere. Pick out a couple of activities that you can go to and bring her with you.
