He is in rehab due to a leg infection & falling. His leg healed & he now walks. What is the step by step process for me being his POA & advance directive? Trying to get him home safely asap?
Request a care meeting to find out why he is not being discharged.
Medicare pays 100% for the first 20 days, 50% 21 to 100 days. Your Dad is responsible for the other 50% if his supplimental insurance doesn't pay. The finance office has to do a predetermination. It should have been all laid out for Dad when he was admitted. My Mom was in Rehab after a 4 day hospital stay for UTI. I told them going in there was no money for after 20 days. They released her at 18 which was too long.
If you feel you can safely take Dad home than ask that he be discharged. If they give u a problem, then use the money excuse if supplimental not paying. Dad can do therapy at home if doctor orders it. Rehabs are not prisons. You can take him out AMA ( against medical advice) but they do not have to give you his prescriptions or any orders.
Does the rehab facility have a copy of your PoA paperwork? Do they know that you are his Medical Representative? You have to present the documents to their business office.
Or, does your Dad still have capacity to make his own decisions? If so, he will be asked to make his own decisions by the facility, unless you provide medical and legal proof otherwise.
Call the discharge team to get specific answers, if they will talk to you.
And yes, what is the actual issue? Is it this or literally transporting him home?

Usually we are trying to get rehab to keep the patient longer so they can get stronger.
Ask when his next care meeting is scheduled so you can speak with his care team and better understand his condition and projected release date.
