Can you work with your local Area Agency on Aging? It can be tough. I live in a major metropolitan area and tried to help my mentor - a wonderful man with only $700 per month from Social Security. He ended up moving to a college town about an hour away where his assisted senior living is based on his income, so he still has some money left over each month for his car and food, plus in a college town - there are a lot of stimulating activities and a great hospital system. His AL has vans that take him to appointments, grocery shopping, etc.
