I cannot lift fridges etc alone and have no help. Nobody in the family is willing (or able, due to back injuries themselves) to lift the unusable furniture (fridge/washing machine/bed/wardrobe etc) onto the kerbside for council pickup - but I certainly cannot do this alone ..... would I have to pay for help - and WHO please?

Here in the US, we have a business Caledonia 1-800-JUNK. They charge to come and haul your stuff away. Might there be similar businesses where you are located?

Where I live large appliances like fridge, washer, dryer and range are often expected to be sold with the house.
This would really depend on the value of the property and furniture, but when my uncle died (he was a pack rat, when we had to clean out his house and outbuildings the task was overwhelming; impossible for us really and not worth our time, expense and frustration) we sold the place "as is" and let the new owners deal with it.

I assume you're emptying and cleaning in order to sell dad's home. Your real estate agent will be able to set you up with people to help you for a reasonable fee. You will have to find the money to pay them. Either from dad's money, yours or your siblings. Whoever puts up the money can get it back when you sell dad's house. Keep careful records.

If any of the things are usable I would hire a company to do an estate sale. If not, I would hire someone to come in and take the things to the curb for pickup.
