More than once, my 92 year old mother has given to much information to spammers. She has caller ID, so she can see the call is not from someone we have programmed into her known contacts list. We have told her over and over not to answer the phone if it is not from a name she recognizes. I have witnessed her answer the calls while I am sitting in the room. I say, “Mom hang up. That is a spam call”. We go over the instructions agin, not to answer the call if she doesn’t recognize the name in caller ID. She says she won’t do it anymore, but she does. We block the numbers when we can, but these crooks that take advantage of the elderly just call from another number. Removing the landline phone is not an option. She does have a cell phone, but she sometimes forgets to charge it.

Has anyone been successful at getting an elderly person with memory problems from answering unknown caller phone calls?

She is no longer to able to remember. She has lost her short term memory. No matter how many times you tell her, she will not remember. She can't be conditioned.

I heard providers to have something that blocks at least robo calls. If you haven't already, you may want to transfer Mom to an Assisted living. I think she is beyond living alone.

Check with the phone provider for blocking unknown calls. Some can do this. Or google CALL BLOCKERS. Companies make pretty simple programmable devices that hook to the phone and can create a WHITE LIST, only puts through numbers you have selected.

You won't get her to remember not to talk to these people. She's going to answer the phone and with her memory issues you are not going to be able to get through to her about not doing it. Sorry.

^^^ This.

I signed up with NoMoRobo about four years ago, and the bombardment stopped within 10 minutes -- no kidding. I was getting 15 calls a day.

Now the numbers have crept up again, but if you just go through your mom's phone's history and text NoMoRobo the spammer numbers, they add them to the blocked number database.

NoMoRobo is free for landlines, too.
