Call the billing department and ask why..

I just got one from a hospital's ER hospitalist's billing service. They were in error. Better to resolve now than to get labeled past due and have a collection agency chasing you.

Do you remember what paperwork you might have signed when your Mom was admitted to the hospital? Maybe you signed something that said you would be responsible for any bills not covered by insurance.
