Need a home alert system for parents in a two story home. Any suggestions?

There is probably any number of senerios you are concerned about. The one you mentioned, one parent falling and needing help would also be my greatest concern. In respect to this, a medical alert of some nature that notiifies medical aid to responds verbally then summons help. Should one parent fall and can't get up, medical response is imperative. Other than an an immediate medical situation, an intercom would be appropriate, possible use both to be on the safe side to cover most all situations. Price wise, there is as many manufacturers and prices as any budget will allow. High price doesnt mean better. A good ole fashion boat distress air horn, plenty loud. Neighbors would be alerted also, a good thing perhaps.

There are also clip on devices that they attach to the clothing and when they move it comes unclipped the alarm goes off...but it's very alarming..shreaking almost. Which I found to be so annoying. Plus if she does a lot of twisting in bed then it goes off all the time. And the hospitals have a pressure pad that goes off when the patient gets up. Those usually play "Mary had a little lamb" really loud..and annoying also. I would recommend the monitor but if he is not a light sleeper then the alarms will work better.

A baby monitor might work, but if Mom is wandering all over downstairs she might be out of range when she needs help. Such a monitor is more useful for keeping an eye on a person in bed.

Your situation is a little unusual in that it is the parent who is in bed who is "monitoring" the parent who is up and moving about.

A cell phone might be an option. I got my husband a very simple-to-operate model (Jitterbug) and programmed in our home number and my cell phone number. Would Mom be able to carry a cell phone on her when Dad goes to bed, and if she needs him call him on the phone? Is there a phone next to his bed? If they already own and know how to use a cellphone, that seems like a straight-forward plan. If not, is Mom's cognition OK to learn to use a simple cell phone with pre-programmed emergency numbers?

My parents used a doorbell system installed in his bedroom and mother would carry around the doorbell button. Another couple I know used a baby monitor system.
I have also heard of using a walkie talkie set. I use the wireless doorbell too. I have the chime in my room, which is a converted garage. Mom has the doorbell with her. You can buy a medic alert system through walmart also.

Another option- Freedom Alert medical pendant- can call up to four numbers before going to 911. Could be a "dad" cellphone, neighbor, friend, relative, etc- goes down the list until someone answers. Very reasonable- about $300 with around $100 for a second pendant (so a couple could reach have one).

An intercom system perhaps...?

I have a 2 story home also. I went to the local BabysRus and bought the baby monitor with a tv monitor. I have the monitor right next to me on a night stand. Works great. But let me tell you the first couple of months...every night I was going up and down those stairs almost every hour. Mom wouldn't stay down. She was a nightwalker. I would put her in bed and with in the hour she was getting up. But the monitor was nice because I could watch her and when I see her trying to stand that's when I would trek down those stairs. I bought an alert system from a catalog that had items for the elderly. I can't remember the name of it. It does not have a monthly fee like a lot of them do. You hook it up to the phone and it calls the phone numbers you program into it. There is a pendant that the person wears and pushes the button when they need help.

I use the VTech Baby monitor system. You can listen to the baby monitor with the 2 adult receivers. Its wonderful and is under $60. Has an excellent range also. Go to Amazon for quick delivery. Will save you lots of running around and alot of stress for sure. Maybe check out your land line phone - maybe you have an intercom on it as well. Hope this helps
