Hiring extra help while in memory care.

You've been writing these posts for some time now about your "99 year old aunt" on hospice in Memory Care Assisted Living. Now she's your friend. Compression stockings won't stop this woman from dying or from her heart giving out. She is non compliant with walking anyway, as you've said, so what are you looking for here, at 99, on hospice? Let her be comfortable and sit in her rocking chair as she'd like to do, that's my advice.

This is a difficult time in your life bc watching the end of life process is hard. Your aunt is happy and not complaining, you said, which is the main takeaway here. Thank God she's in good spirits. I hope she passes peacefully in her sleep one night and wakes up to incredible peace and beauty in God's presence on the Other Side, whole once again.

I do understand about her heart.
She also has dementia so does not have any idea she is near the end of her life.
Is always happy, never complains.
Just talking about this makes me so very sad. She mostly appears to have no feelings and just want to sit her Mother’s rocker and that is where she should be.
Today the footrest on the recliner was still up so she must have slipped off the end.
She should do whatever she wants.
Still upset with facility which is Memory Care but does not care for her like they should and they are also very expensive. Don’t believe she gets the time she should, no visiting or any caring, just dress and undress.

Yes it is - needing to know the best way to handle this! Am very upset and don’t feel I can move her again.

If you are the POA you should meet with the administration. Tell them that your friend has heart failure and that they must keep the stockings on when she's up so as to reduce edema and prevent leaking of fluid and sores, which will greatly increase their work and her woes.

If you are not POA you need to report this to the POA for your friend.

Your next step after meeting with the admin and being certain that instructions re stockings is recorded in your friends care plan would be reporting to the MD.

Ombudsman is for when you cannot work things out in any other way.

I know you likely already recognize that this valve problem has made your friend's heart a failing pump. Her time is limited no matter what is done at this point. You are correct to try to see to it the stockings are on as they should be in order to keep circulation better allowing the weakened heart to eliminate fluid, and to prevent leaking and sores from developing. I just need to know that you do not have unrealistic expectations that there is some magic "cure" in these stockings. Wrongly applied so as to drag down and act as a tight garter they can be more deadly than the lack of them.
