This telemarketing calls have been coming in for months and I told her to ignore them or hang up, but on this day she was expecting a call from her doctor about a sleep apnea machine. So when the folks called and told her they were from her doctor's office and that the doc wanted her to purchase another glucose monitor, she thought it was legit and provided them with the information. She is 77 and is very scared and upset that she fell into this trap. What I can I do now. We have written the credit bureaus, but isn't there something else to do?

It might be time for someone in the family to take over her bill paying and monitor her bank accounts. Scamming the elderly is a huge business. Legitimate companies engage in it, selling nearly useless services and products, so really no company should be trusted.

I personally would be calling n taking her with me to change account numbers if she has a banking account, saving etc.. Credit cards prpobable need to be called n told of the situation n probable you will need to stop those account. Do you have a way to find out where the call came from n turn it in? I am sorry this has happen to your grandma and it sad that it happen too often.

Chances are this was a legitimate company that supplies glucose monitors. They need her info so they can do a medicare claim. This is what I mean by real companies selling unnecessary products in sleezy ways. There's a whole boatload of medical equipment you can get (all paid for by medicare - ie the taxpayers) if the company can get a senior to sign off for it; glucose monitors, durable equipment (walkers, wheelchairs, canes, etc.) etc. It's one of the many problems with medicare that unscrupulous companies have sprung up to take advantage of. At this point, I think seniors are more likely to be 'scammed' by legitimate companies than by actual (law-breaking) scammers.
