Trying to "sell" idea to them about estate planning. My Mom fell on 11/19 and broke femur. My grouchy, 85 year old Dad can barely complete ADL's and is residing in owned home. He has fallen several times, including 2 days ago. Has congestive heart failure and I have been FMLA since 12/1. Mom is currently in top notch nursing home worried about release date and 100 lifetime Nursing home maximum.
First attorney quoted 14.5K to get them qualified for Medicaid. I am an experienced insurance agent who has completed POA and Funeral Plans to return my ex-wife overseas.
Is there a "do it yourself" method for home health services? I want to engage the best services for the best price. I will thoroughly research companies and reviews and don't plan on making a decision in less than 30 days. I live in St Pete FL, they live in Venice FL.

I would research elder lawyers and the cost should be Moms abd Dads. Medicaid makes no guarentee you will get any out of pocket back if, lets say, you sell their house . Call your Office of Aging and see if there is an agency that can help you with getting parents on Medicaid. With 2 people involved splitting of assets is needed. I had no problem with using a medicaid caseworker but I just had Mom and she fit the criteria. A married couple is more complicated.

If the rehab is connected to Longterm care, I may just have Mom transferred there if you feel you cannot care for her.

Every state has different rules. The Medicaid office at a nursing home won’t necessarily do what is other than best for nursing home. Go see elder law atty experienced with nursing home applications. The more $$$ involved the more complicated the case …in NY there was 5 years look back on $$$ transferred. Not sure now. I myself got 5 years paperwork/bank statements/excel spreadsheets together for elder law atty to review.
it’s a lot of work. I also did this paperwork while doing hands on caregiving. It very time consuming and you need to have good records and backup source documents. Good luck!

Doesn’t sound like home health is realistic given their high level of needs. Sounds more like they need to move to assisted living or nursing home level care. You can contact the senior services agency for their county and ask what services they may qualify for. That’s a start. The figure you were quoted to do Medicaid paperwork seems exorbitant to me, possibly due to FL having so many seniors. My family got through it without paying anyone. We were blessed by a business manager at the nursing home who was well versed in the application process, she helped at no charge, but I’m aware not everywhere has this. This website has a feature to help find home healthcare in local area, it just seems like they’re past that point. I wish you well in finding the best solution

Tell your parents to start planning or fail. Meanwhile, research all options & get a presentation ready. If they disagree, you will bail.

Make it clear they have had their lives, you will not be their solution or sacrifice yours. Give them the atty number and they can be stubborn all day!
