Hi, everyone. My mom just got on Medicaid. Should she still have her Medicare Supplemental Insurance policy? Can she keep it if she wants? There is an insurance salesman at their house right now who says it is illegal for him to sell her a Supplemental Insurance policy if she is on Medicaid, but the local Area on Agency said they would help her find the policy that is best for her and she does not have to wait for the open enrollment period to change over. I don't know who to trust, so I hope there is a legal expert who has advice. They live in Iowa. Thanks!

My father was on Medicaid. He was in a nursing home and we brought him home to die. He was on Medicaid for approximately two years. He had Cigna as his prescription coverage and I had to pay Cigna directly for the coverage.
Medicaid does cover some medications but the supplemental reduced his out of pocket costs. I believe it was $20 or so per month.

Here the administration of Medicaid benefits is through several selected insurance companies. Each year Medicaid recipients must chose one of these companies. Medicaid pays them. The insurance card presented to the clinic or hospital is from this company.

I suspect the insurance agent is right -- he can't sell a policy to a Medicaid participant. But that would not necessarily mean there is no insurance company involved. Does Mom have a Medicaid case worker yet? When she does, this is a great subject to discuss with that person.

The idea of a supplement to Medicaid is an anomaly. The health care provider that accepts Medicaid agrees to accept the Medicaid reimbursement rate for services rendered. Extra coverage is pointless.
