It's really irrelevant what worked for us in cases of dementia and Alzheimer's in as far as treatment goes. Your own case is unique as the person's thumbprint. Consultation around what is going to work for distress in your own particular loved one has to be discussed with his/her own physician. I sure wish you best of luck. As most doctors admit, it's anything but an exact science and is basically trial and error in medications. Some that work for one thing have side effects of sedation that make other things worse.
The studies on Memantine were done on early stage patients. It is unknown if Memantine works on mid and late stage as they cannot do the studies on mid to late stage patients.
We used Memantine. Mom had a side effect from the Memantine that caused her to hold her urine. She got ongoing UTIs. Once I stopped the Memantine the UTI's stopped. If you try the Memantine watch urination timing. If you start getting UTI's I'd discontinue.
My DH aunt used the drugs Memantine and Donepezil separately and as a combo for years. Her geriatrician thought it had helped as her decline was very slow. Once she was bed-bound for years we stopped them.
I have known people to say they took Zoloft and it was very helpful. Xanax is the drug of choice for some addicts but I think it can be effective for stopping the racing mind, help alleviate panic attacks and other uses. It doesn’t work the same for every person. The thing is you have to work with a doctor who has the ability and interest in helping a patient find the medication that will help with the symptoms the patient is experiencing and sometimes that’s not easy to discern. Specialist have more experience in some communities/practices and in others there is only the GP.
Since you give no context for your question please do understand that these drugs can do harm if given incorrectly and shouldn’t be stopped without guidance. The unique person and the many drugs they may be on must be considered by a knowledgeable practitioner who understands the pros and cons, the symptoms and the alternatives. You and I probably have only one or two people to observe with and without the drugs. The doctors hopefully have the benefit of many studies as well as practical experience. .
