Our mother is 86 years old, she has been wondering into others rooms and twice now been defiant about leaving. We have been told by Admin that we had to stay for 48 hours that now has turned into day five. Any suggestions?

Ha! Since when does memory care administration get to demand that you do anything? If you decide to live with mom on the premises, do they intend to put you on the payroll?

This isn't any longer someone who can be in ALF. And my brother's not only didn't ever insist on such a thing, but it didn't allow it. You could certainly hire in help or nursing staff or CNA or sitter when/if needed in special circumstances, but you yourself could not stay with family.
This is clearly a case where something is going on to necessitate safe care by someone being present 24/7. Generally this sort of behavior results in some medication requirements. Often hospitalization with 24/7 monitoring and trying out medications that might work to help is required.

Apparently at present she is not safe alone. Neither can YOU be expected to be with her 24/7. If that were the case she would be at home for free! Discuss next steps with the administration now. I think you may be looking at a transfer to locked unit at hospital, transfer to ER for assessment as to just what is going on. Has a Urinalysis even been run in this case at this point.

I am so sorry you're going through this.

That's ridiculous! Are you now supposed to move in permanently with mother and do the caregiving for her as well, while paying her monthly rent at the same time? The admin must figure out what to do about wandering and how to prevent it, not you! In my mother's Memory Care, each resident had a lock on their door to prevent this very thing from happening. Easy peasy.

Do not stand for this incompetence at the Memory Care.
