We used thickeners with my mother until a swallow study found any oral food was unsafe for her as she was high risk for aspiration. If there’s an issue with thickener, consider a swallow study

The last 22 months of my late husbands life I was having to thicken all of his drinks and liquids. I used the product Thick-It and he never had an issue with it.
Please talk to your loved ones doctor if they are having any issues with the thickeners.

I used several Thickening products I never really had a "problem" with any of them.
I am not sure about what you are calling a problem.
I did notice if I used MiraLAX with the thickener that the food or liquid I tried to thicken would thin out. That was due to the MiraLAX pulling the liquid out.
If you are having a problem with noticing coughing or choking when you are using the thickener then maybe the amount you are using is not right. There usually is not a problem if you make a liquid too thick the problem usually is not making it thick enough.
The texture can easily be adjusted but it is always good to consult the doctor or PT/OT trained.
If you notice any extended coughing or problems breathing or odd breath sounds I would call 911 as you may be dealing with Aspiration Pneumonia this can be fatal

Kelly girl, discuss any swallow issues with the medical team. This is crucial. Swallow difficulties can lead to choking, food going into the breathing tubes, pneumonia and even death. This is nothing for a Forum of strangers. You need now to consult medical team and I wish you the very best of luck and expert help.
