I had to take my Mom's 11 year old dog away from her. I feel so bad how do I deal with this?

You did the right thing in taking the dog. With your mom's dementia she was unable to care for him and leaving the dog there would not have been good for him. People with dementia and their pets is a sad situation.

Try not taking the dog over to see your mom next time. I know your heart is in the right place but it sounds like seeing the dog upsets her.

This is yet another example of how cruel a disease dementia is. You can't run over to your mom's back and forth several times a day to take care of a dog, that's unrealistic. Giving the dog another home was the best choice to make. And it is sad but you did what you had to do. Your mom went into AL because she was unable to care for herself in her home. She certainly can't care for a dog if she can't care for herself. Are you taking care of the dog now?

Yes he is with me. I have a dog as well and it's an adjustment for him but great so far. Thanks for your support. It's so difficult.

This must be so hard but you really had no choice. Could he be replaced with a stuffed animal or a doll? It may help a little.

Just promise her that you will keep him and take good care of him. If she wants to see him, take him to her, but don't if she doesn't ask. I took my mothers cat in several months ago after she entered a nursing home, and I already had 6 of my own. My mothers cat hates other cats, and it looks like she always will, so it is living in my bedroom/bathroom. I promised my mother I would take the cat if anything happened to her, so I don't have the heart to rehome it, but its hard. Good Luck

Maybe a picture of her dog ? It could go either way, good or bad for her. Give it try.
