When my husband was occasionally confused and didn't seem to recognize his surroundings, I let him explore if that is what he seemed to want, but kept an eye on him. If he asked me if I knew where a bathroom was I said cheerfully, "I sure do! Let me show you." I refrained from making it seem like his request was odd in any way. When he packed a little bag and headed toward the garage one evening, saying he was going to catch a bus, I explained, regret in my tone, that the last bus of the day had already left. He was very disappointed because "I was really hoping to get to my bedroom." Poor dear. "Well you are in luck! I can take you to a place that is so much like your bedroom you'll feel right at home, and it won't matter that you missed the bus." And I proceeded to help him to bed.
