Guardianship do's and don'ts: Can I hire someone to take care of my mom?

I went to the class and read up on it and looked at the state website and I am not clueless about it. None of the material I have read or the class was detailed. Just asked to make sure I wasn't missing anything because I am new at it. I know how to do the annual report and what is expected as far as when I started. I am in the process of getting a new lawyer because the one I have is useless and I mean useless. I have to hire additional caregivers and pay them and I know I do not have to have consent for that from the courts. What I wasn't sure of was if besides paying with check to keep the records do I need to get a social security and home address from the caregivers. This is the first time hiring caregivers.

The state website of the location the guardianship was issued should have a listing of guardianship responsibilities. In addition to this list, an elder law attorney in the state of guardianship should have a guardianship responsibilities packet they can provide.

Esther, don't you have a true copy from the court which granted the guardianship?   It's been years since I've read a Guardianhip Order but as I recall the options available were enumerated in the Order.

As a guardian and POA you are not obligated to physically care for the person. So yes, you can hire someone to care for Mom out of her money.

It worries me that someone who has guardianship doesn't have information about what she is and is not responsible for and expected to do. Wasn't this discussed during the court proceedings?

I think individual states' websites have sections on guardianship, with information about the legal responsibilities and, for example, reporting and monitoring. Have you tried looking at yours?
