Whether she is changing her clothes, doing her morning routine of washing off (she refuses to bathe) or using the bathroom, the door is always wide open. She is not claustrophobic and closes doors at other necessary times but just not the bathroom door. My 12 year old son and my husband are in the house! Even they have complained but she simply says "Oh honey you don't care what I've got, it's alright" .....Why does she do this?

My Mom has always done this. Parades around in her birthday suit, leaves the bathroom door open, and I really hated it as a kid! Embarassing for me, by now all the neighbors have seen her. And thus from a woman that always wants to close the blinds so nobody sees us when we are eating dinner. ????

If she is living with you, you have a right to make house rules. The bathroom door has to be shut when in use. Be pleasant and firm. When you walk by, close it. If other household members mind, then it isn't up to her.

My mother does the same. It is just her and me here, but I still don't like to see her walking around naked. I would be majorly embarrassed if anyone else was exposed to it.

Veronica is right. You can get a door spring at the local hardware place.
Good grief, seeing GrGma naked could scar them for life.

My Mom does the same thing but she is claustrophobic, but I am still embarrassed whenever I come in their home and walk past the powder room and there she is using the toilet. Heavens, even when I am home alone I close the bathroom door, I don't want to develop Mom's habit.

A 12 year old boy doesn't need to see his grandmother in her birthday suit. I would go behind her and close the door every time you see her doing that. Eventually she will get the message.

Was she living on her own before she came to live with you? I have to admit that I rarely bother to close the door, we single gals can get into some really bad habits...LOL I agree with Pam and Veronica, get a self closing door hinge.

My son is temporarily using a wheelchair. His PT was discussing improving the access to his bathroom by removing the door. The PT asked how his wife would react to that. My son replied that she wouldn't care at all -- that she only shuts the door herself because he insists, but he wouldn't be comfortable.

Apparently there is a huge range of attitudes toward bathroom privacy in the world, even among mentally healthy people!

(They removed the door and hung a curtain in the doorway, temporarily.)

Have you asked her why she does this?

Does she have other behaviors that seem odd? Has she always done this, or is it new?
