I am paying her bills with her money she has joint accts with her dad I live in ny she's from puerto Rico idk what to do and my cuz kids of my uncle are trying to find out too much about properties I feel like they r tryna do things against my grandfathers wishes there is a will and he was a veteran rip abuelo any advise?
& regarding his will, is going to be the situation that it was your mom that was to be the executor of abulito's estate and are the assets of his estate (like property he owns, balances on bank accounts, investments) both in the states and also in PR? If so, you really really really have to have an atty who is with a firm that has atty's who hold licenses in PR and has an office in PR as well as in the states. I'd look for a law group in FL or NY to consult with as PR property law is super sticky to deal with.
Hospice doesn't necessarily mean your mom cannot be competent enough to do whatever is needed legally. Often for those with end stage cancers on hospice are totally mentally capable although they have been determined to have less than 6 months to live….. hospice is brought in to be a way to manage pain & do palliative care for those final months/weeks. So if your mom can meet with an atty that can do work both in states & PR, that's the best thing.
Sorry for your loss. If he is to be buried in a veterans cemetery, you may find that there will be a bit of time - perhaps a couple of weeks - before he can be buried unlike a traditional burial.
Then, of course, any income for your Mom would go to the new accounts, to be spent only for your Mom's needs.

Not an expert here, but a neighbor had this issue, but on a smaller scale financially. He could not use his own money after the joint holder died-so it was simple to just not put any more money in that account and open a new account.
