My grandmother is attending a family reunion in another state for 3 days. My grandfather does not like her family so he does not want her to go. He says he will not take his medication and may harm himself if she goes. She deserves to see her family. They all live out of state and are unable to all get together very often. His dislike for them is highly irrational. He has not taken his medication all day. Not sure what the next step should be. We've all tried talking to him to no avail. Help! My grandma is considering canceling her trip which is completely ridiculous.

Find Care & Housing
Encourage gram to go. If he shows one itsy-bitsy-teenie-tinie symptom, call am ambulance and have him taken to the hospital. Tell gram to stay home. I'm pretty sure that won't happen as when he sees his manipulation is backfiring, he'll relent.

I can only equate this situation with my mom. She has moderate dementia. When I go somewhere, she's quite nervous. "Who will take care of ME if something happens to YOU?" is the unspoken thought. That's probably what's going on with your gramps. He's uneasy.

Is there anyone who can stay at the house while gram is gone? I'd try to make that happen with a family member. You, a sibling, one of their kids; somebody. Your gram deserves this trip!!! Make sure it happens.

She should call his bluff and go. What kind of medication is he on? Is it likely to cause an immediate reaction (insulin, bp meds, anti seizure meds?) If he gets sick, call 911. Tough love is the answer in this situation, I believe.
