My mother who is 86, fractured her lower spine in the nursing home - about four months ago. She did this by just moving about in her room (no fall etc.) I had her moved to a new nursing home, closer to me two months ago. The doctor there is just giving her extra strength Tylenol, which isn't cutting the pain. Does anyone know of a prescription pain medication that could help? Due to the spinal pain my mom has, she isn't eating hardly anything. She has lost 8 pounds in a little over a month! The nursing home is giving her a liquid supplement. When I was a caregiver for both my mom and dad (8 years). I always made sure they ate, and also gave them boost as well. I am concerned, as my mom is a small woman, and really can't afford to loose a lot of weight. I just lost my dad last September to liver cancer, and I would hate to lose my mom - right after his death : ( Any input is greatly appreciated.
Or is she in a nursing home for another reason? Is she still getting therapy? The doctor might also be concerned about taking something stronger than Tylenol 4 months after surgery.
I'm wondering if the rehab PT staff can offer any suggestions on dealing with the pain, whether it's meds or more PT or even just a hot pad (herbal hot pads are great for relaxation). It must be extremely difficult for your mother to have so much pain.
My father was prescribed hydrocodone for rehab after falling.
