Trying to get Mom classified from assisted to skilled. Suggestions?

Maybe they are waiting for a bed to open up? I would ask the Director what the delay is all about.

Unfortunately she is the delay. She says she will check and then never knows. She blames the doctor's slowness, his nurse's slowness. This has gone on too long. I already talked to her boss once and got no satisfaction that anything was wrong. The nursing staff are quick to resolve all things. The administration staff is not. Thanks for listening.

The first question is does your mom qualify for skilled nursing care? If her needs can be med in an assisted living facility but she's out of money, that does not make her qualify for skilled services. You may need to find an assisted living facility that accepts Medicaid and get her signed up for that.

The doctor will not bend on the decision for skilled. It seems strange that some will and some won't but I've already been turned down for Medicaid for assisted because she makes too much. AND I fear would one that would accept it be inferior. AND how hard will it be for her to adjust again. New surroundings are hard for dementia patients. Thanks for all your suggestions but I still feel like all possibilities are becoming exhausted other than bring her to my home which she will still balk at and want to go to her home. AND yes, I'm a worry wart.

Is the facility owned by a corporation that you could possibly reach out to someone even higher than the administrator? I totally sympathize with you as we just went through the having to find a place for my mother-in-law but were very lucky the doctor fully supported us, the administrator helped with Medicaid and even the Medicaid rep expedited our application. Mom was actually still living at home with us and going to daycare twice a week. She is also doing well physically, but her cognitive issues got out of control - would have a bm or urinate no matter where she was - even on our couch which ended up on our carpeting, hid her Depends all over, etc. We found scissors under her bed one day. When she asked me if she should take the two pills she found and showed me two buttons - we knew it was time that she needed more care than we could even provide. The one thing we have done is to keep a list of her changes and every time we went to the doctor, would give her the updated list. This allowed her to track the changes with us. Is there any chance of finding a new physician or even a different facility completely? I am sure you have thought of all these options and you are correct, that changing facilities is very hard, but if you truly feel your mother needs that extra care, and they will not move her to the skilled area, it may be time to look at other options.
