My wife had a major stroke in Aug 2013. We have a caregiver who comes to our house 4 days a week but she does not drive. We are looking for some way to provide the transportation for my wife's caregiver, if that is possible. Thanks for your time.
Transportation options for older adults and people with disabilities is becoming increasingly available. What you may want to keep in mind is that more attention is being brought to accommodations for people with disabilities including accommodating their caregivers. I would recommend contacting your local Area Agency on Aging. You can also contact the National Agency on Aging http://www.n4a.org/transportation. They are usually the local agency that assists connecting older adults with services.
If there's mass transit in your area, check with them to see if they have a small bus service. These buses are about the size of a large pickup truck and in our area can provide door to door service (if pre-arranged).
E.g., in my area, I can get one for only a $1.00 fee and go anywhere within 10 miles of my home.
There might also be some transportation available through a local senior center, since the focus is on serving seniors and transportation might be part of that service.
It's the responsibly of the Caregiver to use whatever transportation they can find to go to their clients.
My boss' wife had several Caregivers who didn't own a vehicle, and they needed to take the bus, but that was easy being we are in a metro area. For one Caregiver he loaned her money to purchase a vehicle and helped her pick out a nice used vehicle [I realize not everyone is able to do that]. Other then that, the only other option was taxi and that would be very expensive.
