You shouldn't feel ashamed for wanting to be paid for your time. However, it's not always easy to get paid. If they are on Medicaid, you may be able to get some hours paid.

Try your state Web site (even Medicaid is partially state controlled). Type "aging" in the search box and follow the links to see where you get.

If your parents have assets, you can set up a contract to have them pay you, but it's best to do that through an estate attorney or an elder law attorney. You aren't likely to get government help unless they are "poor" - at least not unless you have unusual circumstances.
