My father and my aunt are at a memory care facility together. He is very aggressive when other residents are close to him or contradict him. Can they make him leave? He is in late stage Alzheimer’s. Doesn’t know who we are and tells nonsense stories.

My GFs father got this way towards the end too. He pushed a resident, I think in the eye. But I watched him one day when an aide put her hand on his shoulder, he shrugged it off. I thought then, maybe the resident touched him. I know hitting is not a solution but maybe they just don't want that "touching" anymore.

Wouldn't hurt to maybe test him for a UTI, which become more common in the elderly (mostly women but men get them also). The only symptoms are behavioral symptoms and it's treatable with antibiotics.

Good advice below. Medications to calm his agitation. It's essential to protect the other residents, some of whom are frail, but also to make him feel better and calmer.

Ask for a care plan meeting with the goal to come up otherwise a plan to have behavior modification done. The MC has been through this type of behavior before. They will have suggestions, like he gets seen by a geriatric psychiatrist/ psychologist, or he gets a new RX or a modification of the meds he is currently on. Also to get him tested for a UTI as they can cause sudden behavior changes.

Can they make his leave? Absolutely, as everyone else in the MC - staff, other residents, other visitors - need to be able to feel safe & secure.
But that is not usually the initial step, unless he doing something that is beyond really bad. That’s why a care plan meeting needs to be set up and gives you a forum to get all concerns shared. The DON Director of Nursing would be the one to speak with on this and then the POA requests it. If it has to be a written request, it is what it is.

as a suggestion as it’s a “meeting”, the POA should be there and along with another family member who is there to take notes & observe.

Thank you, I appreciate your thoughtful answer. We have had him tested for a UTI and it was negative. We are working on changing his medication but are having trouble finding the magic combination.
This is sooooo out of character for him.
I know he would be mortified. The other residents are my concern along with my mom not being safe with the new version of my dad. The staff is also in flux at the MC as the director is moving. We are having a care meeting this week. I hope the meds will work.

My step-mother became aggressive, we upped her meds and she settled down.
