My sister has been in and out of the hospital since March 2021 and has Medicare but the last time she came home from the hospital in April, she fell and broke her foot and was put in a rehab facility. Then on May 1st they sent her home but she could not walk on it and had difficulty using wheelchair to go to the bathroom so she ended up back at the rehab facility which is where she has been since May.

Medicare quit paying in May so in order for her to stay there and get Medicaid to approve her stay, they had to redirect her SSI (retirement) to the facility.

My question if anyone knows is, if I put her pension check that she received while she was gone into her bank account, will the facility have access to it? I went over to the facility but due to restrictions I could not go to her nor could they wheel her out to me so I had to have someone bring her the check to sign over to me so I can hold it in my account for her but my bank would not accept it without her presense and ID. Not sure what to do and I do not know if there is a time limit to cash or deposit check which shows Northern Trust as the bank on the check.

I am afraid to put it in her account and then have the facility snatch it up.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hiding money, or trying to, will cause nothing but trouble sooner or later. It just is not worth risking her Medicaid eligibility.

Thanks everyone! I kinda already knew the answer but I was looking for some advice on what to do but needless to say, they got the check afterall. She is not at the facility permanantly, just until she can walk on her own.

They have the right to her check and they will take it out of her account. they can do a bank search on her social security number. If you are on Medicaid, they take your SS plus pension, then Medicaid pays the balance due. They will give a personal needs allowance each month. It varies by state. My state allows $50.00 per month. I was in rehab NH and Medicare paid it's part, my supplemental policy paid some and then I paid the balance.

I know that's why I was trying to put it in my account to hold for her but it doesn't matter now anyway, they called me about the check because my sister asked them if they could take her to the bank to cash it so they found out about it and I brought it to them today so they could put it in her trust account.

If your sister is on Medicaid, then her pension plan should have been going to her care probably back in May.

I would call the finance office and ask if there is a balance on her acct. I would also ask if on the Medicaid application if income other than SS was included.

She just got a one lump sum pension check after I submitted all the paperwork required. She is on Medicaid and they have been paying for her care since May with her retirement benefit being redirected to the facility since then.

I brought the check to them today because my sister asked them if they could take her to the bank to cash it so they called me and asked me to bring it to them to put in her trust account.

Similarly situation here. Yes Medicare stopped paying so I have to pay tge bill with her ss money n her savings. Once sge runs out then medicaid takes over n they get all of her ss check plus retirement. I have my moms lawyer helping me on this so I know its correct. You can't hide any money. The facility eats to get some type of payment so they are entitled to het check. If sge has a house they will go after that when you sell it.

Yeah, unfortunately I tried to hide the money in my account for her but my bank would not take it without her and her ID and I knew I could not put it in her account without them seeing it but today my sister asked them to take her to the bank to cash it and they called me and asked me to bring them the check which I did and they will deposit it into her trust account.
