Mom, 85, in assisted living, just placed on hospice. She no longer agrees to participate in any pt and has very limited mobility. They felt it best to place her with hospice. I think it's the most loving thing to do for her. My question is, mom has been a picky eater since before I was born. Her burger is meat and bread, nothing else. She doesn't eat salad, soup. She barely eats the food at the asst.living. She hates protein shakes and the clear protein drinks. She likes milk which I keep in her room fridge. I am picky but not to her degree. I've never met anyone to this degree of pickiness..lol, I will bring her what she wants , I can't get there every day and I can't figure out what to keep in her room or fridge when I can not bring her anything. Ideas?

Find Care & Housing
Does she get hungry or not? If she gets hungry, she may not be so ‘picky’. She has been placed on hospice, so someone has decided that she meets the criteria for potential death in 6 months. If she won’t eat, she may fade away more quickly. Would that be such a bad thing? She is certainly not using the AL resources that she is paying for.

She's been picky her entire life. It's not new. She was paced on hospice because she tells the physical therapy people to get out of her room. She doesn't participate. Today the caregivers said she ate 2 little cups of ice cream and had some milk.

Ice cream became my dad’s favorite in his last years. His sweet tooth really took over much of the time, he liked chocolate, pound cake, and Oreos. During hospice time he liked revisiting favorites. You’re not this far into it now, but in the final week, on advice of a smart hospice nurse, we made ice chips from dad’s favorite drink. He enjoyed the flavor and had some hydration until the end. If no one has told you, mom is blessed to have you, and I wish you both peace

Thank you for reminding me about cheese.
She liked cheese before, so I will present that to her again. The caregiver just told me mom ate ice cream 2x today. I just realized ice comes in those little cups. I can keep those in her little freezer. I'm a pastry chef so I always take her cookies or pound cake. She actually ate a little fruit cake with her milk yesterday. I have saltines and peanut butter in her tiny kitchen.

Your mom is lucky to have you.

Keep providing the milk (whole milk if she'll drink it). How about "snacks": cookies, crackers, baked goods, cheese cubes or slices. Anything she likes that won't go bad if left out. Foods with preservatives are your friends.
