My spouse has Alzheimer's and constantly sleeping. She has been on memantine for almost 3 years. Some days are great, and some days aren't so great. We take one day at a time.

Find Care & Housing
When your wife is awake, how bad is her dementia? Has it seemed to get worse recently? Taking things one day at a time is really all you can do. Every day is different, that's for sure.

I read that the memantine can cause sleepiness. Does it seem to be helping at all? If not, maybe it's time to go off it and see if she becomes more alert.

That's nice that your granddaughter and doggie are living with you. Does she help you care for your wife? Do you have any paid help? I would just caution you not to depend on your granddaughter too much. She's young and shouldn't be too tied down.

I think I would get a hospice eval. I am waiting until my mom declines further before asking for an evaluation. It's such a roller coaster, but her overall condition is certainly trending downwards.

Best of luck.

Thank you for the advice. We have been married for 53 years. I am hoping for some good news from the Alzheimer's conference 24 thru27 October in Boston. I just hope for the best.
My Granddaughter is currently living with us and her little dog. This has done wonders for my wife. I have to keep the faith and talk to God for his support and guidance.
Thank you, Paul.

My late husband who had vascular dementia slept a lot(16-20 hours)towards the end of his life. This is actually quite normal.
Perhaps it's time to bring hospice on board as they will make sure she's kept comfortable and pain free along with having a nurse come once a week to start to check her vitals and aides to come bathe her at least twice a week, along with supplying any needed equipment, supplies and medications all covered 100% under your wife's Medicare.
Best wishes to both you and your wife.
