Well, we finally got mom to a neurologist/psychiatrist today and pending results from CT scan, UTI test, and blood work, the doctor believes she has acute encephalopathy that may be treatable. I am not very optimistic. Mom is so frail and confused that it may be time for AL with memory care. Has anyone dealt with a LO with encephalopathy?
There was no help for him, and in fact he descended into being non verbal. I believe he could hear and understand us somewhat, as he reacted with tears and wailing upon being told of his brother's passing. But he had little ability to follow any instructions or communicate well at all.
I think encephalopathy must vary a good deal as to cause and prognosis.

Any idea of the plan forward for treatment?
My husband recently had a post surgical bleed. The change to his cognitive functions was startling and scary. But with treatment (transfusions, fluid and other supportive measures) his body and mind are both healing nicely.
DH couldn't turn himself over in bed on Tuesday. Today he's doing laps around the unit.
Wait and see.
