Both my mom and dad worked their entire life. They retired and were both receiving social security checks. My mom died about 7 years ago at age 71. Is my dad (currently 81) eligible for surviving spouse benefits? Dad is currently receiving his SS income.

As long as they were married for 10 full years, the surviving spouse can apply for the others benefit if it is larger.

I believe the surviving spouse can take the deceased spouses' monthly amount or his own, whichever is greater.

The social security office is very friendly and helpful. Check them out online, or call them!
