Elderly parent had pre-existing incontinence issues being treated with medications. As a result of a serious illness, now has significant mobility issues. Had an in dwelling catheter for many months but at the recommendation of gerontologist the catheter was removed due to risk of infection and lack of medical necessity. Current issue is that parent voids little during the day (uses a pull-up during the day) so nighttime output is very significant. We have been unable to find an incontinence product that can absorb the night time output. Open to suggestions. Need guidance.

Nighttime output is always greater when the elder lies flat and urine accumulates in the bladder.

She has in a permanent catheter, but it doesn't begin to catch the nighttime output. I actually took one of her adult diapers and poured water into it to see how much it actually held. Over 4 cups! What I can't fathom is where all this urine is COMING FROM! She barely drinks and eats only 2 very small meals. Even with a catheter bag, a depends AND a huge, thick pad, she often overflows the bag or the diaper or both!
Partly is that she doesn't use the toilet for voiding, only pooping. So she's in their all of 1/2 hr a day. She is exhausted by changing out the bag, and it frequently leaks as she has a very hard time feeling how full it is. Personally, I think she should change those cath bags out for new ones once a month, instead of waiting for them to crack due to age. Plus they smell so horrible.
Partly is that she gos to bed at about 7 pm, and so she's in the same depends for over 12 hrs.....She doesn't wake up at night.
I know that when YB gets involved in the nighttime regimen, she has 2-3 extra pads tucked in there, and that helps a lot. On her own (she's cheap) she usually won't even put one extra pad in.
I guess YB could wake her up and change her before HE goes to bed, but he says she's so spacey, it's actually dangerous to wake her. I don't know of a product that will hold urine output of 12-14 hours!
It's easier for men--a urinal hanging on the side of the bed can be used without even getting out of bed. Have you tried that?
I await better answers to this than I gave, I am frustrated FOR mom, although, she doesn't seem to care if she's just soaked her recliner again...SMH.
