She wants to go home on Monday - today is Saturday. She's very angry and depressed about being in the rehab facility. She is somewhat weaker than before going into the hospital, but she is able to walk to and from the cafeteria with a walker. The therapists (physical & occupational) think she should stay longer. I haven't seen her this angry before. I am the primary caretaker. My brother called and yelled at me this morning mainly because he is worried about my mom. I don't know what to do. In some ways I think she should just go home - psychologically it would be helpful. I don't really know if that's an option. I am really stressed about the whole situation and don't know who to talk to.

We don;t always get what we want.. as the song goes.. and I think I would listen to her medical team in this case. My FIL insisted on going home from rehab early,, they said if he stayed they could get him back to a cane.. but nope! So he is still putzing around on a walker and b^%%ching about it.. home PT is NOT the same!

scagal, another thing to think about, if your Mom decides she wants to go home before the end of her treatment, Medicare might not pay for any future treatment regarding this issue. That in itself might be enough to change your Mom's mind about going home too soon.

Is she strong enough to be on her own again ( I assume she was living on her own before). Or will she need more help at home than she had before? Don't you need a couple of days to arrange that?

If mom goes home and needs help, is it YOU she's going to call? If her needs are going to fall on you, then your needs have to be considered. You need to say " mom, you need to be stronger before you can come home. If you come home in this state, i won't be responsible for what happens"

Don't expect her to be happy. But you have to protect yourself.
