She walks with help, eats herself, reads, and sleeps a lot, but lately does not seem to understand what is going on and gets very fearful. She will start screaming for no reason. She will try to get up from the toilet even when she is still going. If I attempt to curtail her movement she fights like a demon, but does not understand what is happening or why I need to keep her from trying to take off on her own. I was wondering if there something I can do to get thru to her and have her understand that I am not trying to kill her when I stop her from hurting herself, or when I have to stop her from doing other things that are not healthy for her or anyone else in the house. I try to explain to her that I love her but cannot allow certain activity that is harmful to her or me...?

It sounds like a mild form of delirium and she needs a prompt medical evaluation. Not just UTI but any infection or even a cardiac condition or small stroke can present vaguely without the specific complaints of pain or signs like fever you might otherwise expect.

Please have her evaluated for a UTI and by a geriatric psychiatrist. It may be a UTI and/or it may signal the onset of a dementia. Was it very sudden or has this behaviour been going on for a while?

I would ask the MD for an Rx of Ativan PRN (as needed)

I agree with Babalou above, wouldn't be surprised if your Mom has an urinary tract infection [UTI]. She can't help the way she is acting. Here's a good article https://www.agingcare.com/articles/urinary-tract-infection-symptoms-151547.htm

She may have a urinary tract infection! Is this a sudden change in mental status? Please call her doctor if it is. You would be justified calling 911 for assistance.

After whatever this is gets cleared up, please seek evaluation by a geriatrics doctor, who can evaluate her need for care.
