Hi Jc, Many folks have a hernia for many years without knowing it. You apparently had one found as an INCIDENTAL finding??? Or was this a visit to an ER with PAIN and you got told you have a hernia? I am certain if you were in ER and said you have no MD in the area they would have provided you, or will now, with an MD you can see on your insurance. What you need to know is whether this is a symptomatic hernia now (that is to say was your vomiting/diarrhea a result of this hernia, or something else entirely and was there pain?), which is an emergent situation that means you need to address this NOW, or whether you were there for some other reason and they said "Hey, you know you have a hernia here; have you seen your doctor with this?" Pain indicates that the hernia may be "incarcerated" which means if in the bowel area it may be taking loops of bowel into a "sort of pouch" and catching it there where it may be deprived of blood flow. This can cause death to the tissue thus captured. I think you should see a doctor sooner rather than later to make certain this can last until you get home to your own MD situation. Of course, merely having this means something could happen at any time. So don't neglect it and let it go to emergency situation. See a doctor now to evaluate where you are with all this. First of all prior to the hernia finding my husband fell and fractured his hip. Had surgery and is still in Rehab. ER did say follow up with your pcp. I am out of state. The NP who saw me in the ER DID not provide a referral physician. I probably would need to go back and ask questions. The diagnosis was so shocking. I didn't even know what it was until I researched what it entailed.
After an ER visit, the hospital will provide the patient with the visit's report, with diagnosis, medicines administered and follow up instructions. It's inconceivable that the hospital hadn't told him in writing when to see a doctor.
Didn't the ER doctor recommend what you should do next? If the d&v were related to the hernia I imagine you would have been advised to make an urgent appointment to have it investigated; but perhaps it wasn't, and the finding was incidental?
