I am looking for a place that can evaluate my mother's driving skills other than the BMV. This was a request from her doctor that just diagnosed her having MCI.

In NJ we had Dad use the Kessler Rehab Center- His Dr and GCM both recomended it. There was a cost of about $300+ but I'm sure something could be worked out on fee. He flunked 2x- he refused to accept 1st evaluators recomendations and took it a second time with diff evaluator. they notified state and state asked him to turn in lic- he refused went to lawyer to fight their unfair decision-lost and state just revoked it- 3 yrs later he still says they were wrong that it is up to him...to decide when to hang up keys. Somewhere I remember getting a lisc is a "privledge" not a god given right. In wrote this with a giggle tho at the time this was going on it wasn't funny-It must be hard to give up some of our usual activities and i always keep in mind my time is coming. I hold a Class A drivers lic so I am aware of how much it means, but seeing some of the accidents over ther years ,I have promised my family I will hand over the keys without a fight.

By "BMV" do you mean Motor Vehicle Dept.? I have no idea what MCI is and I am a nurse. If her doctor wants her tested, then he/she is worried she cannot perform functions necessary to drive. Go drive with her and see how she does. It may be time to take the keys away...

Some occupational therapists offer this service and you'll need a written order from your mother's doctor in order for them to proceed. To find an OT who does this, contact your local Area Agency on Aging, the local Alzheimer's support group or a geriatric care manager.

Best wishes.
