My dad is coming to live with me. I can't leave my dad home alone. What can I do about getting paid to take of him at home. and im also have to get a 2 bedroom apartment. please help
PStegman is right. Not only is it hard to get back into the labor pool, you will be losing Social Security that you'll need for your future as well as any other retirement such as a 401K that your employer offers.
I understand that the pull to stay with your dad is strong, but plan this out very carefully. Too many of us are financially strapped as we age because we've given up jobs during out caregiving years. I hope that you can find some compromise, such as Veterans Aid and Assistance or Medicaid paid caregivers. Good luck, Carol
Unless you are already retired, I would advise against doing this. If he is on Medicaid, talk to his caseworker about a nursing home for him. Keep your job, because if he dies soon, you would be left with nothing. Read some of the stories from people on this site who already did what you are planning to do. They find themselves totally exhausted, because not one of them realized how overwhelming the job was going to be. When they try to find a job, no one wants to hire someone who has been out of the labor pool for years.
Does your dad have funds to pay for his share of the rent and utilities? Does he qualify for any assistance programs, such as the Elderly Waiver? That is a Home and Community Based program that provides services to keep people at home. It is a Medicaid program, so there are income and asset limits. Can he afford to pay for any home care?
I agree that you need to keep your job...at the very most you may need to take FMLA to get your dad settled. Again, you will need to qualify for this leave, but if your dad is ill and/or unable to care for himself, I would think you would. Of course, this is unpaid leave...do you have vacation time to use? Please be sure that you take time to think things through before you make any decisions; giving up a job is a pretty drastic step. Best wishes to you!
