My mom has no retirement funds, only gets Social Security, and is in the early to middle stages of dementia (we’re trying to get in with a neurologist to confirm this). My wife and I have taken care of her for the past 5 years in our home, and I feel like we’re not qualified to do this properly. Does anyone have any experience with Medicare/Humana paying for a memory care facility with a dementia diagnosis? We’ve never navigated Medicare before and don’t know what we’re doing.

No AL, MC or LTC facility care is paid for by Medicare or health insurance. But, LTC facility care can be covered by Medicaid, if one qualifies both medically (as needing LTC by a doctor) and financially (this threshold is set by each state). You should now consult with a certified elder law attorney, estate planner, and/or a Medicaid Planner for your home state since how you manage a person's finances can mess up financial qualification for Medicaid, and in most states there can be a 5-yr "look back" period of their financial activity. If you haven't already watched some educational material on dementia, Teepa Snow has some good videos on YouTube that I thought were very helpful and informative. FYI you don't need to spend the time and money at a neurologist for a dementia diagnosis that is "specific" since there is no treatment nor cure. In the future, your Mom may need meds for depression, anxiety or agitation and this can come through her primary doctor. My Mom is 95 with moderate unspecified dementia, some aphasia and short-term memory loss. Her primary physician put her on a low dose of Lexapro to deal with the beginnings of depression and it has worked very well (and was well tolerated). This forum has a lot of good information so be sure to explore the Resources > Caregiving Topics for articles and info as well as this open forum. I wish you all the best on this journey with your Mom.

These are Health Insurance policies and do not pay for LongtermCare. What your looking for is Medicaid. Make an appt at your County Social Services with a Medicaid caseworker to find out if she qualifies.
