My Dad's driver's license expired 2 years ago and now we need to get him a valid (not expired) ID card. Do we have to get him to the DMV to do this?

Thanks for the replies. I spoke with the dmv this morning after a 45 minute wait. They have a mobile team that will come to you but you have to be transferred to a senior agent to get in on this. They took his info and now we wait for someone to contact us. They have long wait times for this service and tell us it can take a few weeks or months before we hear back on this. If anyone is in California, get in line before you need this service.

Thanks for the update. It’s the same situation if you want to make an appointment to get it done in-person. I tried making an appointment back in February as my license was going to expire in mid March and I figured I might as well get a Real ID before they are required. The soonest appointment available was in May! It’s terrible for the people who can’t take a few hours off work to go stand in line at the DMV. Anyway, I hope they get out to see your dad in a timely manner!

[Just uncrossing my eyes, but...] I think you should be able to do this online or by mail. Go to https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/dl/dl_info#idrenew.

If they won't do it because of how long ago his licence expired - though that isn't specified as a problem - then give them a ring and ask what to do: you'll find the phone number near the bottom of the page. The DMV is indeed the official issuer of ID as opposed to driving licences per se, and your father can't possibly be the only senior person in this position.

She can’t do it online. You cannot apply for an ID card by mail or online. You can renew them but that’s not what she’s doing. He has a license and now needs an ID since he’s no longer driving. You can print the necessary form out but you cannot complete the process on line, it must be done in person. And if his expired drivers license does not have his current address of the nursing home on it, she can’t renew it online either, must be done in person. All she has to do is call and arrange for a field agent to come out to the nursing home. It’s a service the California dmv and most other state dmvs provide :)

Phone the DMV. There may be other ways to get a photo ID card, and they would know.

If you can’t get him to the DMV, you can arrange for a DMV field agent to come out. I believe you have to call the dmv to arrange it.
