Does anyone know how to stop someone from spitting from their bed at night?

Someone I care about has started spitting from their bed during the night. It is both gross and unsanitary. The ceiling, dresser, and walls continually need cleaning. There is Kleenex and a garbage can within range but it is ignored. Help!
