No ambulance service will help us move her. Only to a hospital or a hospice. I called the Fire D. No one called back.

* Her spine is fused to a straight position, bc she has been in a bed unable to stand for over a yr.

Her carpet is 55 yrs old, full of germs and possible mold.(it was excellent carpet when installed). So new flooring is going to be installed, but she can't be in that room during tear out and install. We will put her in another room for 72 hrs and then put her back in the cleaned up room.

Thanks for any suggestions on transporting her flat. PS. Amazon wants $1k for most gurney's.

You state that she's been in bed for a year. Am I correct in assuming it's a hospital bed? If it's not then I can't imagine how it's even possible to do her personal hygiene care and toileting needs. It isn't safe for her or a caregiver to even try to attempt care unless the bed can be raised and lowered and adjusted as needed. If you can't use a wheelchair for her and she isn't in a hospital bed with wheels that can be transferred in or out of the room, what will you do if there's an emergency? Please get her a hospital bed and just pay for a gurney. Think of it as an investment in case you ever have evacuate the house in the event of a fire or some other type of emergency situation.
If she's in a regular twin-bed get a few strong people and have them carry her into the other room on the mattress. Please have an actual hospital bed waiting for her in the new bedroom. You can also try what cwillie suggested and roll her onto a sturdy blanket and have a few strong people transfer that way.

u could probably find a rolling bed or couch with wheels something. u should find your mom a good physical therapist and a nutritionist. once u stay in those position its tough to come out of. she needs to walk and exercise. its sad.

So it's the OPs fault that her 91 y/o mother is bedbound due to age-related decline, alzheimer's / dementia, arthritis, depression, hearing loss, incontinence, mobility problems, and osteoporosis? What's 'sad' is that you would leave a comment like this.

As a former 911 Fire Dispatcher, my advice is for you to look up the Fire Department online, get the name of the Battalion Chief. And call him directly, or call and ask for him specifically to return your call.

I realize they haven't returned your call from before, but you'll be calling a different number to reach the BC. He's your best hope.

I was thinking the same thing. Our department is very helpful. A nice donation after they help is in order. A visit will also let them know and make suggestions so access is EZ should there be an emergency.

Do you personally know any EMT's or firefighters? My brother is an EMT and could use his skills to move your mom-if we lived near each other.

I am not sure if he could borrow a gurney--they are pretty big and bulky, but there could be ways to move mom without too much drama. Professionals have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves. CWillie mentions one--would that be too painful for mom?

Dad was totally 'frozen', due to Parkinson's and YB was able to move him. I'd give it a shot.

Roll her on to a sturdy blanket and with four strong men or women at each corner you should be able to lift and carry her a short distance. Practice first on a volunteer.

Try the Firehouse again. Ask if you can just borrow a gurney. Call around to NHs and ALs to see if you can borrow one. Maybe a store that sells Durable equipment can rent you one. Call a hospital.
