My mother called today sounding bad and said her back is bad. They are doing a culture tomorrow. The last time this happened a few months ago her back was bad. It is very hard to get specifics from her. They are giving her Tylenol at the AL which I doubt will help much. I offered to go and put on a Lidocaine patch but she refused but I will try tomorrow. I was so looking forward to the New Years Eve party at the AL!! I actually was. Family is away for a few days and it's very quiet which is nice today but I felt like going out tomorrow. My husband said we are not going to hang out with other residents.

If it goes into the kidney, yes, back pain from pyelonephritis, and much more dangerous. PLEASE try D-mannose. There are of course many more reasons for back pain including compression of spinal disc and so on. She should have follow up. Could be having sciatic pain, and etc. If there is no UTI she should have spinal xrays, and see orthopedic doc.
I was getting over four UTIs a year until I took D-Mannose (simple capsule, I use Source Natural, about 30.00 for 120 of them through amazon). Works like cranberry. Available in powder form. Not acidic and easy to take; keeps bacteria from adhereing to bladder wall. Have now recommended to three people with same results as I had. I have not had a UTI for more than a decade, knock wood.

I am hoping I can find it in a capsule form. She will not be able to deal with a powder at AL. The test came back negative for a UTI. She said she feels a little better today. I have tried my best to get her to see visiting staff doctor at the AL. Also convinced her to stay on Oxybutynin after speaking with the Urologist office. If anyone has had any experience with that I would appreciate hearing about it. It is very hard to realistically communicate with her about medications since she practiced Christian Science for years and still reads all their literature even though she knows she has to now take medicine.

Make sure you tell the urologist about the back pain. I once had a UTI in my 20s that ended up in my kidneys. Back pain was the only symptom

She was negative for UTI. Was recently put on Oxybutynin. Supposed to see AL staff doctor today.

Still not a definite prognosis. She was put on different medicine last month by the urologist. She has been on Myrbetric. Now she wants to stop the new medication. She has constant pain in her back. She is due back at the urologist's in a few weeks. I will call them tomorrow to try to understand about the difference in medication. She can drive me nuts by stopping medications because of side effects she claims causes them. It doesn't seem as she clearly had a UTI. They will only give her Tylenol. I thought Advil might be better for her back. She also sounded grumpy besides sick even though I have called AL about her,went by with topical CBD. I have alot of family still visiting. I really don't know what to do about her back pain.

Yes, back pain is a sign. The problem with the elderly, is they don't get the burning and sometimes no pain. The only way we knew Mom had one was she started hitting. Hit the aide with her toothbrush one time. But...my 91 yr old MIL had back pain and chalked it up to her bad back. Even the Dr. didn't think it was a UTI.

Elderly people do get burning. The symptoms we get vary individually, young people don’t all get burning just like all elderly don’t get burning. My mom gets burning. I don’t.

Yes Riverdale. Speaking from personal experience, a bad lower back ache is the first symptom I get when I get a UTI. I’ve never had kidney stones or a kidney infection either so that’s not the cause of the pain. It’s the UTI itself. I hope you get to enjoy yourself tomorrow! Happy new year!

She could have kidney stones, which cause pain in the middle back (I've had them). Or gallstones.

ANSWER: The classic symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) are a frequent urge to urinate, especially at night, accompanied by a burning sensation when you do. Lower abdominal cramping and/or lower back pain also are associated with UTIs. The urine frequently has a strong smell, looks cloudy or contains blood.

I hope your mom feels better soon. And I'm with your hubs on not going to the NYE party at the AL...........:)
