My mom is losing weight drastically because she can't eat. I am gluten intolerant & she has felt better on a gluten free diet when she lived with me. She has lived in an Independent living facility that required her to pay for meals if she ate them or not, so she began to eat them that had gluten in them. She is now sick & the new rehab facility she is in has a worse menu than the place she moved from. How do I get a menu that suits her dietary needs?

See internet “senior-meals.org” search Medicaid meals delivery services and qualifications...it shows

“Mom’s Meals” in Colorado and most other states bills Medicaid for gluten free and other dietary needs ..delivers prepared meals. See on internet also for younger disabled on waiver. There is a blood test to determine celiac..I would never do Anesthia on aging unless medically necessary. As my adult/child with a cognitive delay had 9 surgery’s and now has affects but she has Down syndrome and other factors,
MCT oils have helped her focus and she is now doing much better reading for hours instead of coloring. Small doses At start, I could tell after just a few days, see my discussion carol rue ....today regarding and
WAVE the GRAIN on internet..opened in Centennial Colorado I have drive 1 hr to get speciality items she prepared per my request for my family member with celiac, now they opened a BAKERY with lunch items and breakfast ...love them and thank you for your passion to provide for celiac and others.

If its a rehab facility I don't know why you can't request a special diet. But like said, it has to be doctor ordered.

At my mom’s NH, the diabetics had their own dining tables & got slightly different meals. My mom - once she became bedfast - had her meal plan changed to have all foods that needed it to be “mechanized”. The MD, who is the medical director of the NH, writes orders for stuff like this & only then can it be carried out by dietary.

If your mom’s gluten free diet is a lifestyle choice rather than needed or required due to a disease, the facility may not do it at all or if they do she’s going to be billed for a special meal plan. You might want to speak with the head of dietary as to if anyone else is GF and how it has been dealt with. Facility will have a foodservice provider (Arrow, Sysco) that stuff must be ordered from.

If your mom has a 10% weight loss within 30 days, that’s a crisis point. If that has happened she can get supplemental feeding. Just what depends on the facilities ability. Usually year it’s a extra meal replacement liquid, like TwinCal with probiotics. Twin Cal is more than just Boost or liquid yogurt & has drs orders written to get it. My mom’s hospice MD wrote orders for it to be taken twice a day at the NH (as it was hospice it was billed to Medicare) and the NH MD wrote the orders for mechanized meals from dietary at the NH (as it’s dietary at the NH it’s part of Medicaid room&board fees). Each separate as each different billing & fiefdom.....

With my mother, the rehab facility accommodated her dietary requirements only after her doctor wrote orders for it. Could you get your mom's doctor to write an order for her? Is there a dietician at the facility you can consult?

I am certain the facility accommodates low salt, low sugar and other dietary requirements. Unless your mom requires breads and pastas that are gluten free, I don't know why they can't just offer her foods that are naturally free of gluten. Hopefully, the nutritionist or dietician can help you.
