I was wondering when it comes to placement of individuals with aggressive or inappropriate behaviors how exactly is placement handled?
Do they share the same space as those that do not have the same issues? Are they housed together with other problematic individuals?
Do facilities take on residents that have history of such behaviors putting others at risk? Do facilities keep eyes on the person to protect others?
Should this even be a concern when it comes to looking at placement options?
We are no where near this stage yet, but it did get me wandering about how stuff like this is handled.
Due to HIPPA I do not think we can legally ask if any of the residents have had issues with abusive or inappropriate behaviors, so do families just have to gamble on it? Or can we ask if others have a history of such behaviors.
One man wandered alot. This was allowed within a safe range & escorted with staff when outside in the garden. One man bit, hit & spit anyone in range so he was positioned away from other residents at all times. He also screamed at birds & moving trees. A newer resident had been admitted for dementia related innapropriate sexual behavior, medication trials to subdue this were ongoing, staff were assigned so he was never alone with only one staff or one resident.
Having seen this place, having met the residents, I felt they were well cared for & their behaviours very well managed. I would have been confident to place a relative there if required. However, if I had read case notes on these people, the dementias, the behaviours before hand I think I would have been very shocked & scared. As a family member of a new resident I would have thought WTFiretrucks! No way!!!
