I have searched online to no avail. She went to a specialist and all they recommend is her to go off Nexium which she did. She has been burping nonstop for at least three months with no end in sight. She is 79. They are going to look down her throat in June. She is at her wits end.

Anyone heard of this before? Any ideas?

Does mom drink coffee? I had the same problem about 12 years ago. Doc prescribed Nexium. I decided that I did not want to take a med the rest of my life, then gave up coffee instead. I drink green tea most mornings, and go out for a latte and breakfast on Saturday. Don't notice a burping problem with my one cup of coffee a week. I do, though, sometimes crave coffee through the week.🍮

Are her burps exceptionally smelly? Like eggs or sulfur? I had this problem off and on since I became intimate with opiates. Now anything that takes longer than usual to digest ends up coming out with the worst smell. I was even accused by a co-worker of farting when it was a burp. I was too embarrassed to tell the truth. This started years before the internet and I eventually figured out what foods to definitely avoid and what foods might cause it. It hasn't happened in a couple of years so not sure if I just grew out of it or eat better or both. My main culprits we're rare beef, too much cereal, and opiates

So far she picked up beano yesterday. I’m going to buy her the activia today. I will ask her to try the straw idea. We are desperate for something to work!

My understanding is that burping and flatulence can be caused (or at least made worse) by swallowing air. It's a habit that is almost unconscious, and I have had to try hard to stop it. It sounds as though your mother will understand, so perhaps she can try that as well as all the other suggestions.

Has anyone looked beyond her digestive tract? I can remember that burping and "indigestion" was a major symptom of my mom's angina/heart disease.

Jules, I have found Activia yogurt is good for probiotics, something my primary doctor had recommended. Just find a flavor that Mom enjoys :) My favorite is peach.

Does she take any probiotics or prebiotics? Is she eating a lot of raw foods?

If she is not taking probiotics, can I recommend trying them. They are great for gut health, as are prebiotics.

Raw foods tend to cause gas during the digestion process when the gut health is compromised.

Have you tried beano? This might give some relief until you find the cause.
