my mom has started with dementia but it seems to have progressed at a very rapid rate...... It started in February of this year but has progressed just in months to where she does not know me........ She has renal failure and I was wondering if dementia is a common side effect of this disease. I do not see anything on the internet about dementia related to this but can not figure out what is causing it. Doctors no help all they say is dementia is not a disease and there is no test for it, dementia is a symptom that can be caused by many underlying issues. Can anyone comment on dementia that could be related to kidney disease

I am so very sorry that you are facing this double whammy with your mother.

I have not run across a connection between kidney disease and dementia. If you can't find it on the Internet it probably isn't a known association. But I know this, when my husband (Lewy Body Dementia) has any kind of a illness his dementia symptoms are much worse. The cold or injury or flu did not cause the dementia -- the deposits of protein in his brain did -- but the symptoms are exaggerated when he is sick. I have heard this from other caregivers as well.

Perhaps your mother's dementia symptoms are not caused by the renal failure, but the renal failure makes them worse.

Whatever is causing what, my heart goes out to you and to your mother. It is heart breaking that she doesn't know you.
