Patient has been deemed incompetent by doctors but shares a joint bank account with wife in which social security is deposited. Monthly bills such as copay for medical, life insurance and installment agreements for debts need to be paid. Can the money in account be used to pay bills?

You can get the wife to sign the checks. Talk to her about setting up the POA's for herself. It is too late to set them up for the husband, but it may be that having them set up for the wife will be sufficient. We never know what the future will bring.

No at the present time there is no poa or guardianship set up. Every month i write checks out for them and give them the bills, a spreadsheet register and checks to sign then i mail the checks.

Are you asking if the wife can write checks to pay the bills? Since she is on the account, it shouldn't be any problem. Do you know if she is his POA for finance and healthcare? I hope they were set up. It would make things easier.
