Hi all. I haven't posted for quite some time and had to set up a new profile. Dad has been in AL since July 2014. He was diagnosed with non treatable prostate cancer and has been in hospice care since mid May. I can deal with that issue but I feel his dementia is advancing. I would say since late August he really isn't recognizing me. He hasn't known my name for quite some time but lately when I visit him I stick my face close to his and say hi dad but no acknowledgement what so ever. He hardly talks at times unless he in in the phase of wanting to go home. I ask simple yes/no questions without a response. Any response is very robotic sounding.
The little routines I have had with dad for decades are no longer triggering a response.
Any ideas and suggestions would be helpful to me.

Mthr has no idea who I am, but if my husband comes in wearing coat, tie, and hat, you'd think a movie star had arrived! Maybe that's who she thinks it is! She still can't say anything to him. As they leave us little by little, it's the glimpses of the old self we have to appreciate.

There comes a time when they are mostly non verbal, heartbreaking isn't it? Sometimes I have to beg my mom to speak to me and I've stopped asking if she knows who I am. Strangely enough the aides have told me they have had conversations with her, I wonder if they are delusional.

With Hospice he should only be on meds for his comfort. But...that is a good question. He may be getting moraphine for pain. You really need to talk to the Hospice nurse about the change. My Mom shut her eyes and didn't open them again. I think she knew we were there just couldn't respond. This may be the start of the dying process. Again, talk to the Hospice nurse.
